As questions persist over its health benefits, e-cigarettes appear to have made their appeal to the masses in the gadget-centric world, according to the L.A. Times Monday. Though no studies have been conducted regarding its effectiveness in alleviating smoking problems, people continue to use these battery-powered cigarettes to quit smoking. According to the piece, unlike gum or patches, e-cigarettes mimic the sensation of smoking while providing a nicotine rush. The Food and Drug Administration, however, has not approved these devices as an aid to quit smoking and has even tried to stop the products from entering the country. Despite the opposition, e-cigarettes have developed a fan base. Bloggers and message board contributors have proclaimed their allegiance to the device, sparking the question of whether the FDA is overreacting to the new product.
